dplyr provides tools for "data.frame in, data.frame out" operations. This implies that all mutating operations must result in vectors (columns). This induces semantic limitations when the results of a non-vector argument (which may be arbitrarily expensive to compute, or non-deterministic) must be shared across several other vector columns. cachyr attempts to solve this problem by allowing arbitrary objects to be cached within data.frame mutating verbs.
