In karawoo/cbccy: Columbia Basin Climate Change Yields

The climate change and crop yield tool is an interactive map-based web tool that allows users to examine climate projections and their effects on crop yields for the Columbia Basin. The tool is intended as a decision aid:

helping producers to make planting decisions for the current year
facilitating learning about what would have happened if they had made different decisions in past years

Install this package with:

install.packages("cbccy")

The vignettes directory contains different projects included in this package. You can see the vignettes by issueing browsevignettes(<package name>). The getting-started vignette walks you through downloading and installing the necessary raw data and some of the available functionality. The app vignette contains the R shiny app. Other vignettes will involve additional analysis or tools.

The tool brings together multiple data sources and presents them in one location. An incomplete and unfinished list of functionality includes:

Effect of planting date on yields
Number of historical years in which the last freeze date was later than the selected date
Number of historical years in which the first freeze data was earlier than the selected date
Display of days in which the temperature was above a threshold temperature for that crop
Display of growth stages for crops based on GDD
Display of life stages for insects based on GDD
Inclusion of additional variables that are predictively useful for yields
Display of days in which precipitation is above and below the historical average
Forecast of precipitation based on historical/future forecasts as something analogous to GDD
Expected yields of different varieties of the selected crop, based on GDD needed for maturity (faster maturity is correlated with lower yield)
Selection of multiple varieties to see maturity dates for labor planning purposes (staggering harvests)
Ability to see, for a selected location, historical years that were similar to this year or to a selected future year, as well as other locations that are experiencing similar temperature/precipitation patterns to the current year
