openNHTSA

Convenient access to the NHTSA WebAPIs

This package provides some simple helpers for accessing the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration API from R. It uses the jsonlite and magrittr packages to provide a simple way to convert from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration queries to R dataframes suitable for quick analysis and plotting.

Installation

This library has not yet been added to CRAN, so you'll need the devtools package to install it:

install.packages("devtools")
````

Once devtools is installed, you can grab this package:

Examples

The wrapper currently supports two facilities: complaints and recalls.

• Complaints are reports filed by vehicle owners with the NHTSA. For example, this past weekend the power steering failed on my 2010 Ford Fusion. It was pretty scary so I wanted to see if anyone else had complained to the NHTSA with the same issue:

• Recalls are filed by manufacturers who determine a product or piece of original equipment either has a safety defect or is not in compliance with Federal safety standards. Manufacturers are required to notify the NHTSA with this information within 5 business days.

The NHTSA API, and this wrapper, uses a hierarchical API structure like: - facility (e.g. "recalls" or "complaints") - model_year (e.g. "2010") - vehicle_make (e.g. "ford") - vehicle_model (e.g. "fusion")

These functions are "chained" together, much like the UNIX pipe operator. Their order does matter and should be in the order shown in the list above. Finally, the nhtsa_fetch() function sends the query to the NHTSA api. The results are returned as a data.frame.

Find available years with a query like this:

Much of the code and documentation in this package is directly copied from that wrapper. That package is licenced under GPLv2, and so this package is also licened under the same licence.
