Are You The One?

What is this project?

Netflix recently released the MTV original "Are You The One?". Having sat on the couch next to my wife as she watched I couldn't help but to try to solve the probability of the contestants winning the grand prize. It became very apparent that the probability is complicated. With the results of season 1 and 2 running counter to my intuition, (SPOILERS AHEAD) I became curious if there was something weird happening with the probabilities that could explain it. Alternatively, it is possible there is something to be said for stick 20, 20 somethings in a house with a ton of alcohol that is the key to true love? Probably not, but might as well check.

Basic Rules of the Show

  1. 10 Men and 10 Woman live in a house together for 10 weeks.
    • In season 2 they add an extra woman but we will address that later.
  2. Each man and woman has an "expertly" selected "perfect match" that they need to find.
  3. To win the grand prize, all 10 pairs of couples must find each other at the end of week 10.
  4. Each week, 3 couples will win a competition, 1 of those 3 are then selected for the "truth booth" which will confirm or deny their match.
    • If they are a "Perfect Match" they are removed from the house to stay in the honeymoon suite.
    • If they are not, they return to the house.
  5. After the "truth booth", all men and women pair up and they submit the pairings for the week. They are then told how many matches they have, but not who are a match.

Assumptions

  1. Drunk 20 somethings will select they matches randomly at first, using strategy as they gather more information.
  2. The producers of the show are not giving any hints to the cast.
  3. Drunk 20 somethings' strategy will be the probabilistically optimal strategy given an incomplete set of information.

Questions

  1. What are the odds of success with various numbers of contestants?

Nice to haves

  1. Pull human names as opposed to M1, M2, M3.

Goals

Familiarize myself with the formal packaging and unit testing
