nppesapi queries the NPPES API with an R wrapper. It allows systems to access NPPES public data in real-time, rather than through batched uploads. The API retrieves data from NPPES daily.
For help with the nppesapi R-package, there is a vignette available in the /vignettes folder.
The package can be installed with
devtools::install_github("bgreenwell/nppesapi")
After installation, the package can be loaded into R.
library(nppesapi)
The main function in the nppesapi package is nppes_api()
. It uses a query string acceptable to the NPPES API
and returns the response in a formatted object. This is essentially limited only by the API. One important
limitiation is 200 responses. This can be worked around with multiple queries and use of "limit=200&skip=200", etc.
nppes_api("city=dayton") nppes_api("number=1124021324")
A second function is npi_lookup()
. It looks up a specific field for a list of NPIs. This is limited to specialty
at the moment. It can query any number of NPIs.
npi_lookup(c(1649246182, 1831117050), field = "specialty") npi_lookup(c(1942218276, 1275768434, "1124042692", 1013913409, "1932348661"))
