Description

The World Happiness Report is a survey of the state of global happiness that ranks countries by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. Almost all the information here is gleaned from the report and appendices. This regards the report data from 2008-2018 included in the 2019 report.

Details

The happiness_score variable regards specific figures shown in the report. It seems to essentially be the ladder score but they are not identical. Furthermore, 'happiness score' and 'ladder score' are used interchangeably throughout reports. Presumably one would want to use the ladder score, as it is the main measure.

According to the report- "'Dystopia' is an imaginary country that has the world's least-happy people. The purpose in establishing Dystopia is a benchmark against which all countries can be favorably compared (no country performs more poorly than Dystopia) in terms of each of the six key variables, thus allowing each sub-bar to be of positive (or zero, in six instances) width. The lowest scores observed for the six key variables, therefore, characterize Dystopia." The actual score is considered part of unexplained variance (i.e. residual).

In tables ladder_score and positive_ and negative_affect are typically outcomes.

Note

This does not contain all the information available from the report website. Choices were made especially due to the amount of response and/or arbitrarily determined relevancy. Also, for reasons that are unclear, the happiness score is labeled 'life ladder' in the raw data.
