In nverno/seedsub: Contains seedling/substrate data from Mt Moosilauke

Description

This dataset contains the substrate data for segment plots. It was recorded for different plots in 1989, 1998, 1999, and 2003. Different protocols were followed in different years, but the general idea was to record substrate as being moss, bare rock/soil, or various types of litter (mixed, deciduous, or coniferous).

Format

An object of class data.table (inherits from data.frame) with 352 rows and 36 columns.

• PID: Plot identifier, links to 'segplots'. Some are NA, where only substrates were measured.

• CONTNAM: Contour name

• STPACE: Pace along contour

• YEAR: Year of census.

• SGDSP: Segment displacement from contour ("U"=up, "D"=down) in paces (or m?)

• QPOS: Quadrat

• Substrate types:

  • BLA5/BLD5: Bole aerial/Bole dead on the ground (at least 5cm diameter)

  • BSOIL: Bare soil

  • RCK: Rock

  • WATER: Water

  • WDG5/WDG1: Dead wood on the ground (at least 5cm/1cm diameter)

  • MSSG: Moss

  • TIPA: Tip-up

  • STPA: Stumps

  • LITT/LITM/LITC/LITD: Total General/Mixed/Coniferous/Deciduous litters on the ground. In 1999, this is the sum of LITM, LITC and LITD. In 2003, this is the sum of LITM, LITC, LITD, LITCRCK, and LITMRCK.

  • WDA5/WDA1: Wood aerial (at least 5cm/1cm diameter)

  • MSWDA5/MSWDA1: Moss on aerial wood (at least 5cm/1cm diameter)

  • LITCRCK/LITMRCK/MSRCK: Coniferous/Mixed/Moss on rock

  • MSBLA5: Moss on standing live bole (at least 5cm diameter)

  • MSWDG5: Moss on dead wood on the ground (at least 5cm diameter)

• ASPCL: Aspect class

• ELEVCL: Elevation class

• SEASON: Season data was collected (only for summer of 2003)

• DATE: Date data was collected

• SUMG: Derived variable (sum of everythin on the ground). For the various years this included the following:

  • 1989: BLA5, BLD5, BSOIL, RCK, WATER, WDG5, MSSG, LITT. When SUMG was <95 or >105, LITT was adjusted to make SUMG equal to 100.

  • 1998: BLA5, BLD5, BSOIL, RCK, WATER, TIPA, STPA, MSSG, LITT, WDG1. No corrections made.

  • 1999: BLA5, BLD5, BSOIL, RCK, WATER, TIPA, STPA, MSSG, LITT (the sum of LITM, LITC, and LITD), WDG5. No corrections made.

  • 2003: Only substrates on the ground were recorded. These were BLA5, BLD5, BSOIL, LITM, LITD, LITC, LITCRCK, LITMRCK, WDG5, MSSG, MSRCK, MSBLA5, and MSWDG5. No corrections made.

• SUMA: Derived variable (sum of everything including aerial). In years:

  • 1998: SUMG + WDA1

  • 1999: SUMG + WDA5

• CORRECT: Indicates if a correction was made to adjust for SUMG.
