Wie wordt straks m'n liefje

[CHORUS]
Zeg me, zeg me gauw!
Wie wordt straks m'n liefje
Ben je, ben je wauw?
Wie wordt straks m'n liefje
Zeg me, zeg me gauw!
Wie wordt straks m'n liefje
Handen in de lucht!
Misschien kies ik voor jou!

[SUB CHORUS]
Of jou! Of jou! Of jou!
Misschien kies ik voor jou!
Of jou! Of jou! Of jou!
Misschien kies ik voor jou!

[VERSE 1]

Richel's review

In this song, K3 sings about mate selection. As a biologist, I think it is cool K3 apparently uses something similar to a lek mating system, in which the females select from multiple males competing for her love simultaneously.

I strongly disagree with 'het leven is te mooi om alleen te zijn' ('life is too beautiful to be alone') [1]: it insinuates that being alone is a worse life, whereas there are plenty of examples of inspirational people that chose a life in isolation to make their life more meaningful. Additionally, it implicitly states that a female is dependent on a partner for a better life. I think this is a potentially damaging message for K3 fans, that could have been encouraged to live an autonomous (and just as meaningful) life.

On the other hand, K3 clearly takes initiative in finding a partner [2], which helps empowering the fans in to do the same.

Yet, then again, initiative is put at the mate's side: he (let's assume a male, but it could just as well be a female partner here) should send her messages on a daily basis [3]. Why wouldn't K3 send those messages themselves? Additionally, why let the mate invest his/her time in this trivial communication, where one could consider it even more preferable that he/she spend her time in a more meaningful way that may invole long bouts of intense concentration, that would only be disturbed by such activities.

I think this song, up until now, has the most complex sentence of all: '[hij/zij] heeft zo'n stralende lach dat duizend lichtjes in die duistere nacht zijn blijven schijnen voor mij' ('[he/she] has such a bright smile that thousand little lights have kept remaining to shine in that dark night') [4]. I enjoy this complexity, although I cannot rule out the hypothesis that the sentence is made long for the rhyme and just sounding pretty. I have a hard time grasping what the exact meaning of the sentence is, but I have that same feeling of some of Shakespeare's prose, so I put the blame on my side.

The third verse is sung more sentimentally, and that does help break the song's repetitiveness. It is my favorite verse.

All in all, I enjoy the lek mating system, I think there are a lot of bad ideas in the song and I enjoy the Shakespearian sentence in the third, more sensitive verse.
