The polygons have been projected using an Albers Equal-Area Conic projection with parameters equal to those suggested by USGS for the contiguous US: (A PROJ4 specification of +proj=aea +lat_1=29.5 +lat_2=45.5 +lat_0=23 +lon_0=-96 +ellps=WGS84).
