The muffle furnace is a well-insulated oven with a maximum temperature of 1100 °C. It is typically used to remove organics from glassware, filters, or sample material (ashing). It is critical to know the melting point of whatever you are putting inside it (see below).
Material coming out of the muffle furnace can be very hot and there is a chance of shattering if items experience a dramatic change in temperature. Wear eye protection and use metal tongs with heat resistant gloves as necessary.
Note: The example below is for ashing glassware. Adjust the set point and ramp rate according to the material you are working with.
Setting | Description | Suggested Value --------|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------|----------------- Hb | Holdback | Lo Hb U | Holdback units | 10 rmP.U | Ramp rate units (SEc, min, Hour) | min dwl.U | Dwell units (SEc, min, Hour) | Hour CYC.n | Number of times program should be run. | 1 SEG.n | Segment number | 1 tYPE | Sets type of action for this segment (rmP, dwEll, StEP, End) | rmP.r tGt | Target temperature | 500 rATE | Rate of temperature increase | 2 SEG.n | Segment number | 2 tYPE | Sets type of action for this segment. Set to dwell at target temperature. | dwEll dur | Dwell duration | 4 SEG.n | Segment number | 3 tYPE | Sets type of action for this segment. Set to temperature as fast as possible. | StEP tGt | Target temperature | 20 SEG.n | Segment number | 4 tYPE | Sets type of action for this segment. Set to end program. | End End.t | End type (dwEll, rSEt, S OP) | rSEt
| Setting | Description | --------------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hb | Holds the program when the measured chamber temperature deviates below (low) or above (hi) or both (bAnd) the setpoint minus the hold back unit value. Hb U | Holdback units Ramp (rmP) | Measured chamber temperature ramps linearly from it's current value at either a defined rate (rmP.r) or within a defined amount of time (rmP.t) to a defined setpoint chamber temperature (tGt). Dwell (dwEll) | A defined amount of time or duration (dur) that is required to hold the chamber measured temperature constant. Step (StEP) | Step segment allows a new setpoint temperature (tGt) to be defined. The control module will attempt to achieve the new setpoint temperature instantaneously with no ramping. End | Defines or signals the end of a program. End.t | Defines what the controller is supposed to do now that the program is done running. There are three settings or choices: Dwell (dwEll) at setpoint; Reset (rSEt) and revert to single setpoint operation; Segment Output Power (S OP) has the controller revert to manual mode.
| Material | Suggested Program | ---------------------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------------ Borosilicate glass (e.g., Pyrex) | 500 $^\circ$C for 2-4 hours Quartz/Fused Silica | 1000 $^\circ$C for 2-4 hours New GFF or GFC filters | 500 $^\circ$C for 1-2 hours Organic samples for AFDM | 550 $^\circ$C for 3 hours with a 0.5 $^\circ$C per minute ramp rate Fritted funnels | 480 $^\circ$C for at less than one hour
| Material | Melting Point | -----------------------|-------------------- Aluminum foil | 660 $^\circ$C Borosilicate glass | 820 $^\circ$C Quartz/Fused Silica | 1665 $^\circ$C GFF or GFC filters | 800 $^\circ$C
If you find a fire burning inside, get the fire extinguisher, put out the fire, and leave the room until the air is sufficiently cleared. If you are unable to put out the fire, pull the alarm and get out.
If you smell something strange coming from the muffle furnace, turn off the oven and wait for it to cool before opeing.
