R toolkit at the Antarctic Division

• general read functions for oceanographic remote sensing

Key is automating data library for multiple users. Adding tools and workflows to this is relatively easy.

File collection and example tools

• index of files for an entire collection (e.g. southern hemisphere sea ice concentration)
• file-set provides basis for read function

configuring auto-download

• configuration in JSON
• download primarily done with WGET
• some post-processsing (unzip, augment meta, various)
• glued together with R tools

All generic, low-maintenance, low dependencies.

Tools provided by research cloud RStudio - user in a browser. Our data library is networked to each server.

overall

• reducing repetitive work required to find, download, wrangle, time-varying spatial data sets.

• curate commonly used products, add to the daily downloader, write a toolkit function

Everyone using our approach can leverage these efforts.

augment existing geo-tools

We use standard geo-tools, geospatial readers, and spatial analysis packages in R.

As required we write our own wrappers to libraries such as GDAL and NetCDF

All users contribute feedback and can contribute directly to the software and documentation.

Interest in exploring the reach of our approach, ready-to-use with some straightforward network and cloud computing arrangements.
