R/geom_timeline.R

#' Visualize the times at which earthquakes occur within certain countries
#'
#' In addition to showing the dates on which the earthquakes occur, we can also show the magnitudes (i.e. Richter scale value)
#' and the number of deaths associated with each earthquake.
#'
#' @return The geom \code{geom_timeline} used with the \code{ggplot} function, produce a time line plot of selected earthquakes.
#'
#' @details The data to be used with this geom must be downloaded and readed from NOAA site,
#' \url{https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/nndc/struts/form?t=101650&s=1&d=1}.
#'
#' @inheritParams ggplot2::layer
#' @param mapping Set of aesthetic mappings created.
#' @param data The data to be displayed in this layer.
#' @param stat The statistical transformation to use on the data for this layer, as a string.
#' @param position Position adjustment, either as a string, or the result of a call to a position adjustment function.
#' @param show.legend logical. Should this layer be included in the legends?
#' @param inherit.aes If FALSE, overrides the default aesthetics, rather than combining with them.
#'
#' @param na.rm If `FALSE`, the default, missing values are removed with
#' a warning. If `TRUE`, missing values are silently removed.
#' @param ... Other arguments passed on to [layer()]. These are
#' often aesthetics, used to set an aesthetic to a fixed value, like
#'   `colour = "red"` or `size = 3`. They may also be parameters
#'   to the paired geom/stat.
#'
#'#' @section Aesthetics:
#' \code{geom_timeline} understands the following aesthetics (properties of the plot that can show certain elements of the data)
#' (required aesthetics are in bold):
#' \itemize{
#'   \item \strong{\code{x}} #Time variable
#'   \item \code{y}          #Factor indicating some stratification
#'   \item \code{color}      #Color of border of elements
#'   \item \code{shape}      #Shape
#'   \item \code{size}       #Size
#'   \item \code{alpha}      #Transparency (1: opaque; 0: transparent)
#'   \item \code{fill}       #Color of inside of elements
#'   \item \code{stroke}     #Stroke
#' }
