An object of class tbl_df (inherits from tbl, data.frame) with 3055 rows and 21 columns.

Variable descriptions

warid

War ID. Character with 605 distinct values. Most common: ECW2.1-2480 (73), EIW2.1-535-IW-139 (108), EIW2.1-600-IW-163 (69). NAs = 0.

GWn

Gleditsch-Ward numeric country code. See Gleditsch and Ward (1999). Numeric. Max = 920, min = 2, distinct = 141, mean = 437.239, sd = 259.251, NAs = 0.

sdate

Start date of the war. Date. Max = 2009-01-28, min = 1816-08-26, distinct = 760, NAs = 0.

edate

End date of the war. Date. Max = 2010-12-31, min = 1816-08-30, distinct = 686, NAs = 0.

year

Year. Numeric. Max = 2010, min = 1816, distinct = 195, mean = 1930.42, sd = 57.523, NAs = 0.

warname

Name of the war. Character with 604 distinct values. Most common: Iraqi Resistance (73), Vietnam War, Phase 2 (69), World War II (108). NAs = 0.

GWc

Gleditsch-Ward alphabetic country code. See Gleditsch and Ward (1999). Character with 141 distinct values. Most common: CHN (191), FRN (179), UKG (205). NAs = 0.

Outcome of war: 1 = on winning side, 2 = on losing side, 3 = compromise/tie, 4 = war transformed into another type, 5 = ongoing at end of period, 6 = stalemate, 7 = conflict continues below war level, 8 = party changed sides. Numeric. Max = 8, min = 1, distinct = 9, mean = 2.319, sd = 1.692, NAs = 1.

outcome_chr

Character version of outcome. Character with 9 distinct values. Most common: 1 = on winning side (1394), 2 = on losing side (726), 3 = compromise/tie (270). NAs = 1.

intnl_chr

Character version of intnl. Character with 3 distinct values. Most common: Internationalized (598), Not internationalized (821). NAs = 1636.

country_name

Standardized country name. This is the same across all datasets in this package, so you can always join them by country_name and year. Character with 141 distinct values. Most common: China (191), France (179), United Kingdom (205). NAs = 0.

type

War type: civil (intrastate) or interstate. Character with 2 distinct values. Most common: Civil (2013), Interstate (1042). NAs = 0.

side

Which side of the war was this state on? Numeric. Max = 2, min = 1, distinct = 2, mean = 1.158, sd = 0.365, NAs = 0.

initiate

Did this country initiate the war? 1 = initiated war, 2 = did not initiate war. Numeric. Max = 2, min = 1, distinct = 3, mean = 1.656, sd = 0.475, NAs = 2013.

initiate_chr

Character version of initiate. Character with 3 distinct values. Most common: Did not initiate war (684), Initiated war (358). NAs = 2013.
