House sparrow survival data.

Description

Measurements of samples of house sparrows (Passer domesticus) brought to the Anatomical Laboratory at Brown University after a severe storm. They were published by Bumpus (1898) who used the data to illustrate natural selection.

Format

A data frame of 136 observations and 13 variables:

line:

line number from Bumpus' table

sex:

male (m) or female (f)

age:

adult (a) or young (y) for males only

survival:

logical indicating survival of the storm

length:

length (mm) from "beak to the tip of the tail"

alar:

alar extent (mm) from "tip to tip of the extended wings"

weight:

weight in grams

head:

length of beak and head (mm) "from tip of the beak to the occiput"

humerus:

length (in) of the humerus

femur:

length (in) of the femur

tibiotarsus:

length (in) of the tibiotarsus

skull:

width (in) of skull "from the postorbital bone of one side to the postorbital bone of the other"

keel:

length (in) of keel of the sternum
