Description

2018 LAPOP survey of experiences with and exposure to crime in select Latin American countries. The variables are as follows:

  • pais. Country.

  • ed. Respondent years of schooling (0 to 18+ years).

  • jc10. Agreement with: "a coup is justified when crime is high".

  • aoj11. Perception of neighborhood insecurity.

  • q1. Respondent sex.

  • aoj12. Confidence that judiciary will punish the guilty.

  • b18. Trust in national police (1 = not at all, 7 = a lot).

  • infrax. Perception of police response time.

  • e16. Approval of vigilante justice (1 = strongly disapprove, 10 = strongly approve).

  • aoj22. Opinion on the best approach to reduce crime.

  • q3c. Respondent religion.

  • q5b. Importance of religion to respondent.

  • q10new_14. Monthly household income (0 = no income, 16 = highest income; see LAPOP codebook).

  • etid. Ethnicity.

  • vic1ext. Was respondent a victim of a crime in the last 12 months? (1 = yes, 0 = no).

  • vicbar7. Have there been any murders in the last 12 months in your neighborhood? (1 = yes, 0 = no).
